    History

    Khowai is situated in a plain along the Khowai River. Hence from the river the district as well as the headquarter town get its name. There is predominance of both the Bengali and Kokborok languages in Khowai. The sub-division has already become a district named “Khowai”. All the district regulatory offices will start functioning in the district town Khowai. Two sub-divisions, Khowai and Teliamura, make up the new district, with a total area of 1378.28 square km.

    The District Court was inaugurated on 31.07.2018. There are Courts of the District & sessions Judge, the Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Civil Judge (Sr Divn), the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class-cum-Civil Judge (Jr Divn), the Civil Judge (Jr Divn)-cum-Judicial Magistrate 1st Class.The District & Sessions Judge also presides over the Special Court of NDPS, the Special Court of POCSO and other such Tribunals and Courts.

    There is also Juvenile Justice Board in Khowai and the Civil Judge (Jr Divn)-cum-Judicial Magistrate 1st Class holds the additional charge of the Principal Magistrate there. The Sub-Divisional Legal Services Committee governs the legal services functions in the district.
